Writing UpWord:
College Essay Coaching

When students apply to college, they have just 650 words to convey who they are, how they think and how they write - and make an indelible impression.

Consider the college application essay a student’s “interview” with a university. The college application essay - often written as a story - needs to convey the student’s character and aspirations.

Compelling stories convey authentic human experiences and speak to the heart and the mind of the audience. Many high school students have not yet mastered the craft of this mode of writing.

I can help.

I work with individuals, or groups, guiding writers through every step of the process. Students learn to write compelling college essays that admission officers will notice; they will also gain invaluable writing skills that they will apply to their college and career writing. Session One - Getting Started:

Our sessions begin in conversation. I ask many questions to uncover the students’ talents, aspirations, and stories in order to find the best topics for their intended audience.

Sessions Three to Five - Voice, Style and Fine Tuning:

We again review the essay, discussing voice, sentence style, punctuation and mechanics. After three sessions, students have a sound and compelling essay. If students select the five session package, I introduce additional techniques for further elevating style.
